President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has said his government aims to increase the income of fishing families as part of broader efforts to develop the fisheries sector.
In a post on X to mark Fishermen’s Day, President Muizzu said fishing has been central to Maldivian life “since the beginning of human settlement”, noting that fish remains the country’s main staple.
He said the government was working to modernise the fisheries sector, expand the industry and create new opportunities for fishers to increase production and improve household incomes.
Fishermen’s Day is observed annually on 10 December. This year’s official celebrations are being held in Raa Atoll Dhuvaafaru.
