Former President Mohamed Nasheed said last night that he will fully support MDP's efforts in finding success in the upcoming Local Council Election.
Hanimaadhoo constituency MP Abdul Ghafoor Moosa (Gapo) was appointed as MDP's interim Chairperson, with Nasheed taking to X to congratulate him and stating that he would maintain "party unity".
"...I will fully support all the work that needs to be done to reach success in the upcoming Local Council Election," said Nasheed.
Nasheed came back to MDP on 23rd June 2025 after a two year hiatus. During the rally held to celebrate him rejoining the party,, Nasheed stated that MDP will win most of the Local Council Election, with President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu only being able to win 20 percent of it.
While Nasheed had stated that MDP would have his full support during the election to be held on 4th April 2026, the party had split into two factions creating political dissatisfaction. Nasheed's and former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's factions had a row during the last two weeks of their work to elect an interim Chairperson.
However, Ghafoor was elected as interim Chairperson after both factions had come to the same opinions.
