Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s current leadership is not aligned behind any single political figure and will act solely in the interest of the party, newly appointed interim chairman Abdul Ghafoor Moosa said today.
Speaking at a press conference alongside senior party members shortly after assuming the role, Ghafoor said the MDP’s strength lies in ensuring that every member has an opportunity to engage politically, and that this principle guides the party’s work.
“So we all have to keep that in mind. Then our party will always be strong and everyone will be united. We will not work with any other mindset. We are not behind any particular leader- we are in MDP,” he said.
He assured members that all internal matters would be handled impartially and that no member should feel sidelined.
Responding to claims of internal division, Ghafoor said differing opinions had always existed within the party and were part of its identity.
“It is not a party split. MDP has always, from the beginning, survived with this difference of opinion. So it will remain that way,” he said.
Addressing criticism that MDP has been slack in its role as the opposition, Ghafoor said the party initially gave the new government space to deliver on its pledges. However, he said the situation had deteriorated.
“Things are now going from bad to worse. The government is working as it pleases by changing things,” he said.
“We are not here to give that opportunity. Therefore, we will continue our party activities to prevent such things.”
Ghafoor was elected interim chairman at the MDP National Council meeting held last night, securing 65 out of 66 votes from members present.
