The first segment of the government's project to modernize Boduthakurufaanu Magu by asphalting the road has finished and opened yesterday, with Minister of Housing, Construction and Infrastructure Dr. Abdulla Muththalib stating the expansion of the road along the market will begin today.
The MVR 144 million project to widen Boduthakurufaanu Magu was awarded to MTCC in August. The first segment of the project covers the expansion of the road outwards into the lagoon from the Fish Market up until the Republic Square, with it having been expanded into four lanes and asphalted. The road was opened yesterday upon completion.
Minister Muththalib commented speaking to Mihaaru News, stated that as the first segment has been completed, work on the second segment will begin today.
"The work on the second segment will finish before Ramadan and will be opened by then. We are starting this phase with the confidence that we can finish it," said the minister.
The first day of Ramadan will be 18th February 2026, as per the calendar.

Minister Muththalib said that the first segment covers the Fish Market up until the North Harbor, with the expansion and asphalting of the road from the Republic Square up until the Carnival area.

Just as it was done in the first segment, a part of the lagoon will be reclaimed from the Fish Market up until the North Harbor in order to expand the road to include four lanes of traffic, said Minister Muththalib. He also said that the entire stretch of road will have a layer of asphalt and be made to a modernized standard.
"Work on the sidewalks will begin today," said Muththalib.

He went on to say that as the market area is subject to vehicular congestion, the expansion of that road to include four lanes will bring about a great ease, with it being seen even now.
Muththalib stated that the expansion and modernization of Boduthakurufaanu Magu empowers the government's work to make Male' a satisfying place to live.
