President Dr Mohamed Muizzu last night reiterated that he has brought an end to influencing the judiciary from the point he took oath of office as president. He stated that it is only through news media that he becomes aware that certain people have been summoned to court.
Speaking to residents of Henveiru ward, Male' last night, the President asserted that the judiciary is now entirely independent in its truest sense.
He declared that there is no one now who would say that either he or the government exerts influence over the judiciary.
"Some people might say this is a lie. But in all honesty, I only become aware of some people having been issued summons chits to court through newspapers," the President said.
The President assured that he would never take any action against an individual for their politics. He emphasized that no one would be summoned to the police office or courts for their political activity.
"I have said before that I want to bring an end to this culture of vengeance, the practice of harming each other through political tides. That is a pledge I made. There have been no political prisoners over the past two years. So it is evident I do not influence the courts," he said.
The President reiterated that there is no instance where the courts have ruled in a certain manner on his instructions. Instead, he has focused on ensuring the judiciary is independent, he said.
"The results are clear," the President said. "Authorities no longer hesitate to act against drug cases and other serious crimes."
"I believe this has been achieved because the judiciary now has full independence."
The President stated that the compilation of the Judicial Service Commission will also be changed in accordance with his pledge. He said that necessary amendments to the law would be proposed, and everything would be done in its correct order.
"Even as we take the next steps, it should be evident to the public that the judiciary is operating independently in its true sense."
