Man arrested for hacking Viber account and extorting money

A man has been arrested for allegedly compromising another person’s Viber account and extorting money from multiple parties.

Police said the suspect, Ahmed Hassan, 33, of G. Male' Hiyaa 03-16-1, was arrested under a court order following a complaint lodged with the Anti-Scam Centre on 30 November.

According to police, Hassan is accused of extorting a total of MVR 150,300 from several individuals, of which MVR 75,000 was withdrawn.

He was taken before the court for a remand hearing and has been ordered into custody for 15 days while the investigation continues.
