Police have recovered 78 drug bullets from the stomach of a man found deceased in a Hulhumale' guesthouse.
In a message sent to media today, Police revealed that the drug bullets were found in the stomach of a Nepalese man who was discovered deceased in a Hulhumale' guesthouse on November 30. Although there were no outward signs of injury, Police conducted a CT scan on the body, through which they discovered the drugs.
After seeking legal guidance from the Prosecutor General's Office, the drugs were retrieved from the deceased's stomach on Tuesday with the help of a doctor, Police said.
It has been reported that the procedure on the deceased's body was carried out at the Hulhumale' Cemetery. Police explained it was done there rather than at a health facility because the body was severely decomposed and unsuitable for surgery.
Police said that the procedure was carried out by doctors under the guidance of specialists.
Through the procedure, 78 drug bullets were removed from the body, the accumulated weight of which comes to 818g.
Drug bullets are small, bullet-shaped packages of narcotics which are often ingested to smuggle narcotics into countries.
The investigation so far has revealed that the man arrived in Maldives on November 26, accompanied by two other persons. The three had initially been in K. Maafushi, and checked in at the Hulhumale' guesthouse two days later. On the day of the man's death, the two others accompanying him left the country, Police said.
According to the Police, details of the case have not been released due to the ongoing investigation. They noted that efforts are underway to examine surrounding circumstances, identify other parties involved, and verify information, cautioning media against spreading speculation or unconfirmed reports.
