Fire breaks out at Laamu Gan power plant

A fire has broken out at the power plant in Laamu Atoll Gan, causing significant damage to multiple engines.

A person speaking from the island said that two to three engines were burnt beyond repair after the fire broke out in the building.

The power plant supplies electricity to three islands in the atoll. However, the island has lost power following the fire.

Fire also spread to the fuel tank located within the power plant premises and has burned severely, the person speaking from the island said.

“The panel survived. One genset has survived. But it will not have the capacity to power the whole island,” he said.

Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) said its Central Area Command is currently responding to the incident.
