Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) yesterday commenced bariatric surgeries, a procedure that helps severely obese patients lose weight by altering the digestive system.

Male' City Group of Hospitals (MCGH) CEO Ibrahim Haleem announced in a post on social media last night that the surgery, which alters the digestive system or nutrient absorption, would take away the need for other treatments for some obesity-related health issues.

This includes Type 2 diabetes, increased blood pressure, high cholesterol, cardiac complications, and certain types of cancer, he said.

Haleem stated that the procedure is expected to improve both physical and mental health, while boosting self-confidence.

The surgery department has been preparing to introduce important procedures such as bariatric surgeries for some time now, according to Haleem. He said that it has been achieved through the collaborative work of many individuals.

Bariatric surgeries were first conducted in Maldives at ADK Hospital, where the procedure was introduced five years ago.
