Maafannu Central MP Asma Rasheed has been removed as chair of parliament’s Social Affairs Committee following controversy over a message she sent to constituents ahead of a public meeting with the president.

Parliament Speaker today announced changes to the committee, with Dhuvaafaru MP Mohamed Ali appointed to replace Asma as a member.

A new committee chair has not yet been selected.

Asma’s removal came after she sent a message asking constituents to inform her if they wished to pose a question or relay a message to President Dr Mohamed Muizzu during a session scheduled for Thursday at Thaajudhin School.

She later apologised, saying in a press release that her intention had been to collect the views of constituents who might not have the opportunity to speak directly to the president at the event.

In a message to MPs, President Muizzu said the purpose of the meetings was to allow the public to address him directly, submit letters or share concerns themselves.

“Some MPs are texting the people otherwise, and I would like to ask them not to do so,” he said.

President’s Office spokesperson Heena Waleed also rejected claims circulating on social media that questions and opinions for the president’s meetings must be submitted in advance. She said attendees were being given the opportunity to speak freely.
