The prosecution has appealed to the High Court after a man accused of involvement in the murder of 17-year-old Ahmed Udhayyu in GA. Maamendhoo was acquitted by the Criminal Court.
In February 2021, prosecutors charged three men- Ahmed Shameem of Rihifarudhaage, Mohamed Mazin of Gulfaamuge and Sharaf Rasheed of Bilehmaage, all from GA. Maamendhoo with the fatal stabbing of Udhayyu.
Shameem and Mazin were convicted and sentenced to death, but Sharaf was acquitted of participating in the murder.
The state has now appealed Sharaf’s acquittal to the High Court, which has yet to decide whether to accept the case.
Sharaf was, however, convicted of assault with a dangerous weapon and sentenced to seven years in prison.
A minor was also charged in connection with Udhayyu’s killing. The Juvenile Court earlier sentenced the individual to 25 years in prison and ordered him to pay MVR 1 million in compensation.
