The Maldivian Embassy in Sri Lanka has appealed to Maldivian residents in the country to exercise caution and take protective measures due to the severe rainfall currently affecting Sri Lanka.

In a statement released tonight, the Maldivian Embassy noted that a Red Alert has been issued for Sri Lanka due to the heavy rain, flooding, and dangerous landslides caused by Cyclone Ditwah.

The Embassy urged Maldivians to:

  • Avoid all non-essential travel.
  • Stay away from areas prone to flooding and hazardous incidents.
  • Refrain from going outdoors during periods of heavy rain and strong winds.
  • Secure and store essential supplies such as food, water, and medicine.
  • Keep mobile phones charged and safeguard important documents.

The statement also appealed to Maldivians living near overflowing rivers, in low-lying areas, and near the coast to relocate to safer areas, as warnings of river overflow have been issued by relevant authorities.

The Embassy confirmed that no Maldivian nationals have reported any harm from the severe rainfall occurring in Sri Lanka, where many Maldivians live. To support travelers and foreigners affected by the rain, Sri Lankan authorities have set up a 24-hour emergency hotline, 1912.
