President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu today stated that the severe rain currently affecting the Southeast Asian region highlights the increasing dangers of climate change.

The ongoing severe weather in Southeast Asian countries has caused major flooding in Thailand, Indonesia, and Vietnam, leaving many people in distress. Additionally, a large area of Sri Lanka is also experiencing extensive flooding due to the current heavy rains.

In a social media post regarding the situation, the President expressed that the Maldives shares in the sorrow over the damages suffered by Thailand, Indonesia, and Vietnam due to the flooding. He stated that the events reveal the dangers of climate change.

In addition, the President also extended condolences to Chinese President Xi Jinping and the families of the victims following a fire in Hong Kong buildings that killed over 100 people.

Sri Lanka suffered the most significant damage from the current rainy spell. Due to Cyclone Ditwah, flooding and landslides in Sri Lanka have resulted in 56 deaths and 21 people missing.
