Former Member of Parliament (MP) for Dhihdhoo constituency, Abdulla Waheed,
has decided to contest for the position of interim Chairperson of the Maldivian
Democratic Party (MDP), following the resignation of Fayyaz Ismail.
Fayyaz Ismail resigned abruptly as the MDP Chairperson
last Sunday, stating that it was to fulfill his pledge to ensure a level
playing field for all candidates contesting the upcoming MDP Presidential
Primary.
Waheed has shown interest in a
temporary position that will be voted on at the National Council meeting of the
party tonight. Former MP Mohamed Aslam, interested in the role, is disqualified
from contesting due to not being a National Council member.
The MDP Steering Committee has opted to leave the
appointment of a new Chairperson to the National Council and will propose a
date for the Chairperson election for their consideration.
Therefore, key decisions regarding these matters are
anticipated during tonight's meeting.
