Hulhumale' Hospital reports that the man injured in today's fire at the old power plant sustained severe burns across his body.
A Hulhumale' Hospital official told Mihaaru News that the 43 year old Maldivian man injured in the incident is being treated in the hospital's emergency room. They said that the man has suffered third degree burns.
It has been learned that the incident occurred when the man came in contact with a medium voltage cable while doing electrical work at the old powerhouse.
Authorities shut off power in Hulhumale' temporarily for efforts to save the man after he was electrocuted and a fire broke out.
In a post on social media, STELCO said that a fire broke out while an issue with a switch gear at the old Hulhumale' powerhouse was being fixed. The incident caused varying levels of injuries to a STELCO staff member, they said.
As a result of the issues faced in the powerhouse's medium voltage panel, some feeders providing electricity to areas in Male' and Hulhumale' went off, causing a power cut. Power has since been restored in all areas.
