Torrential rains to continue across Maldives for next 24 hours

Maldives Meteorological Service (MET) has forecast heavy rain across the country over the next 24 hours, with showers expected to persist into the coming three days.

A Met Office official told Mihaaru News that rainfall is likely to ease next week.

“The north and south of the Maldives are expected to see rains slowing down after three days, while central atolls may experience continued rainfall for about five days,” the official said.

Swells forming in the Bay of Bengal near India and Sri Lanka are indirectly affecting the Maldives. The Indian Meteorological Centre has warned that the swell could develop into a storm within 24 hours, with the storm forecast to hit Tamil Nadu and Puducherry within 48 hours.

Cyclone Senyar, which had recently struck Indonesia, was initially expected to threaten Maldives, India, and Sri Lanka. However, the Indian Meteorological Centre confirmed today that it no longer poses a threat to the region.

According to the Maldives’ Nakaiy calendar, the current Nora Nakaiy of the Hulhangu monsoon is expected to continue with occasional showers and moderately calm seas, although wind speeds remain high. The final Nakaiy of the Hulhangu monsoon, Dosha, will end on 9 December.

The Iruvai monsoon typically runs from January to March, while the Hulhangu monsoon lasts from May to November. Transitional months, including April and December, mark shifts in weather patterns.
