President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced that
the government plans to demolish the old Arabiyya School building located on
Chandhanee Magu and develop the site into a parking zone and a park.
The school was relocated in
January 2023 after the building, which began use 10 years prior in 2013, was
deemed unsafe for students due to severe cracking in its supporting pillars.
Speaking at a meeting with
the residents of Maafannu, the President stated that the government has decided
to demolish the school and construct a parking zone and a community park on the
site. The President noted that developing a park there would benefit students
from nearby schools. He added that the park would be designed to accommodate
parents waiting for students outside the school gates.

The government aims to
complete and inaugurate the project, which involves developing a park and
parking zone on the approximately 11,000 square feet of land, by the upcoming
month of Ramadan, according to President Muizzu.
The seven-story building,
which housed Arabiyya School, developed major cracks in its pillars eight years
after it was opened. Following the relocation of the students, part of the
building was used as a storage facility for the Election Commission and the
Ministry of Education. The other section housed the Scout Association and the
Cadet Office.
However, since the decision
has been made to demolish the structure, the Ministry of Education instructed
the removal of all stored goods last September.
