The number of reported cases of Influenza and Dengue Fever has increased
this month.
The Health Protection Agency (HPA) stated that the
number of positive Influenza cases reported so far this month is higher
compared to the previous month. Consequently, the HPA has appealed to the
public to take precautionary measures against diseases like the flu, urging
individuals to cover their mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing. The agency
also advised children, people with respiratory illnesses, and the elderly to
avoid crowded public places.
Additionally, the HPA urged the public to wash hands
thoroughly with soap when necessary or use hand sanitizer, and to avoid taking
children when visiting sick people.
The HPA reported that last month, there were 59
Influenza cases and 342 Dengue cases. The agency also noted that over 25,000
cases of the common cold were reported during the same period.
Dr. Ahmed Faisal, a pediatrician at IGMH, stated in a
post on X last night that Influenza is spreading rapidly in Malé, and some
children are experiencing severe body aches to the point where they are unable
to walk. Dr. Faisal therefore appealed to the public to get vaccinated.
Dr. Faisal also mentioned that Dengue fever, which is
transmitted by mosquitoes, is currently very prevalent in the islands of Kaafu
Atoll. He specifically noted that cases have significantly increased in K.
Himmafushi and K. Maafushi.
