Over MVR 180,000 recovered in recent anti-drug operation 'Alimagu'

Police announced today that over MVR 180,000 was discovered during the major anti-drug operation recently conducted against drug traffickers.

Since November 1st, the police have been conducting a large-scale operation named "Operation Alimagu" targeting drug traffickers. As part of this, a coordinated operation launched simultaneously across 39 islands on November 13th resulted in the seizure of 29.68 kilograms of narcotics.

Speaking at a press conference held to provide information on the operation, Chief Inspector of Police Ahmed Naif today stated that a total of MVR 188,959 was recovered from the locations targeted in the operation. However, the exact total amount of money linked to the arrested individuals has not been finalized, as financial investigations against them are still ongoing.

A total of 119 individuals were arrested during the nationwide drug operation. Of those arrested, 61 people tested positive for drugs. Based on evidence, 38 individuals had their remand periods extended, though some of them have since been released.

As part of Operation Alimagu, the police also conducted separate operations in GA. and GDh. Atolls based on intelligence reports. These operations yielded a total of 12 kilograms of narcotics, and two individuals were arrested on suspicion of drug trafficking. Police also reported the arrest of one person in Malé on suspicion of trafficking.

Home Minister Ali Ihusan previously stated that Operation Alimagu is the beginning of robust measures to halt the drug trade. He affirmed that the efforts will only cease when those involved in the drug trade stop their activities.
