First Lady Sajidha Mohamed has said it is unacceptable to normalize violence, especially in an age of digital advancement.

In a message marking the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, the First Lady said she wished to speak on behalf of women and girls who remain silent out of fear and have not yet been able to seek help or speak out.

She said that everyone has the right to safety, dignity, and the freedom to thrive, noting that violence should never be regarded as a “normal” part of daily life.

The First Lady also emphasized the importance of empowering women in digital spaces, saying that online harassment and intimidation must not be tolerated. She called for collective efforts to build a digital environment that protects women and girls and supports a safer society both online and offline.

A UN report released to mark the day, highlighted that 50,000 women were killed last year by their partner or family member.

The First Lady expressed deep concern over the lack of progress in combating gender-based killings as well.
