Police have announced that they will be holding a press conference this afternoon regarding 'Operation Alimagu', the major drug operation they recently conducted.

Operation Alimagu was carried out on November 13, where 100 locations were simultaneously raided and about a 100 individuals were arrested. Minister of Homeland Security and Technology Ali Ihusan stated at the time that all the arrestees were involved in the drug trade.

In the two intervening weeks, Police have not revealed any details regarding this operation. Following media reports about the lack of information being disclosed, Police announced the press conference for this afternoon.

Ihusan previously stated that the arrestees include persons involved in various levels of the drug trade.

He declared that it would no longer be possible to engage in the drug trade in Maldives, pledging to 'make life very difficult' for anyone attempting to do so.

In an interview granted to State media PSM, Ihusan said that those involved with the drug trade will now be forced to give up those acts. He stated that the harshest legal action will be taken against those involved in the crime.

In a social media post announcing the drug operation, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu also stated that over 100 locations would be searched simultaneously with more than 500 Police Officers on task. He stated that this is the largest anti-drug operation carried out in the country in recent history.
