President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has stated that there should be no hesitation when trying to protect women from violence.
President Muizzu posted on X today speaking on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, stating that there should be no hesitation when it comes to protecting any woman or child from acts of violence. He also said that building a society where safety and security are guaranteed is everyone's responsibility.
As per the President, online harassment and exploitation via online platforms are increasing as our lives are becoming increasingly interconnected through technology.
And so, the President said that everyone should work together in including women and children in fostering an environment where women are protected so that the children grow in peace.
The UN released a report regarding the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, which states that an estimated 50,000 women were killed last year by intimate partners or family members. The report also raised concerns over a lack of work being done against such killings.
The report further states that 60 percent of the killings from across the globe are committed by either an intimate partner, father, uncle, mother or brother. It also states that 11 percent of male deaths are committed by someone close to them.
This is a number that has been built upon information obtained from 117 countries. The report states that 137 women are killed daily or around one woman every ten minutes.
