MDP National Council to designate party chairperson

MDP's National Executive Committee decided yesterday that a temporary chairperson for MDP, after Fayyaz Ismail resigned from the post on Sunday, is to be designated by MDP's National Council.

Fayyaz was elected as chairperson on 14th May 2022. He resigned due to discord within MDP's leadership. Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and Former President Mohamed Nasheed had a difference of opinion on certain matters, which continued even after Fayyaz's resignation.

An MDP National Executive Committee meeting took place yesterday in order to decide the procedure in designating a temporary individual for chairman responsibilities, until someone can be elected. They decided that MDP's National Council is to decide who the temporary individual should be.

The committee decided to submit a request to the council to hold a meeting posthaste in order to decide an election date.

"We will proceed with the topics discussed after a lengthy discussion in an open environment and in line with what the council decides," as was said in a statement released by MDP last night.

MDP leadership had met yesterday in order to discuss how party operations should proceed and for immediate arrangements.

Fayyaz spoke during Sunday's National Council meeting, stating that in his time as chairperson, he had prioritized establishing party unity and to work "together", but he does not see the party progressing by attempting to compensate for the pain felt in the past.

Fayyaz had shed light on the conflicts within the party in his resignation letter.
