Authorities have launched an investigation into the sudden death of a pregnant woman who had been admitted at the International Medical and Diagnostic Centre (IMDC) in Addu for childbirth.
It has been learned that the patient who lost her life during caesarian surgery was a young woman from Hithadhoo.
While facing allegations of medical negligence regarding this case, IMDC released a statement where they said that the pregnant woman's condition had suddenly worsened early yesterday morning after her caesarian surgery had already been scheduled for this morning. Until that time, her condition had been normal, the hospital said.
The hospital further said that the patient had been satisfied with the treatment even up to that point, and had been engaged in discussions with the medical team.
The hospital said that the patient's condition worsened yesterday morning in a way not previously observed, prompting immediate emergency treatment.
However, during the emergency procedure, the medical team had been able to save only the baby, the statement read, expressing grief over the mother's death.
"The emergency medical situation arose at approximately 4:39am. She was immediately administered treatment, and with the complete cooperation of the operation theatre team, an emergency surgery was immediately commenced. The baby was safely delivered. However, we are deeply saddened that despite the tireless efforts of our doctors, nurses and clinical staff, due to the emergency medical situation, we were unable to save the life of the mother," IMDC's statement reads.
IMDC stated that this is the first such incident at the hospital since it began operations in 2011. They assured that even in the emergency situation, the specialist team had strived to provide the highest quality care.
IMDC stated that it would extend full cooperation to the Health Ministry and other related authorities that are investigating the matter. The hospital also stated that it would provide all possible assistance to the deceased's family.
