The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has begun investigating a case of
alleged money laundering and corruption against Mohamed Faisal, who resigned
today from his position as a High Court Judge.
It is understood that the ACC initiated the
investigation into Faisal following a referral from the police regarding the
allegations of money laundering and corruption. Information also indicates that
the police are conducting a separate investigation related to Faisal.
An ACC media official told Mihaaru News that a
case of alleged money laundering and corruption involving a High Court Judge
has been registered with the commission. The official confirmed that the
commission is currently investigating the necessary aspects of the case.
However, the commission did not disclose any further details regarding the
matter.
Faisal resigned from the judiciary today while the
Judicial Service Commission (JSC) was also investigating several complaints
against him. The JSC is also looking into cases involving several other High
Court judges.
Faisal's resignation comes despite the JSC having
approved his appointment as the Chief Judge of the High Court in April of last
year. However, the position was never formally handed over to him, even after
many months.
He recently resigned from the position of the High
Court's administrative head last week. Following his resignation from that
administrative role, the High Court was temporarily handed over to Judge
Abdulla Jameel Moosa, the most recently appointed judge to that court.
Faisal was appointed as a High Court Judge in July 2018.
Prior to that, during the administration of President Abdulla Yameen, he served
as the President's representative on the JSC and also held the position of Vice
President of the JSC.
