First Lady Sajidha Mohamed has stated today that providing State employment to persons with disabilities (PWDs) reflects a firm commitment to human dignity and equality.

The First Lady made these remarks while speaking at the ceremony held at Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) today where employment letters were presented to 40 persons with disabilities that the company newly hired.

She characterized this initiative as a means of addressing longstanding grievances of many Maldivian citizens.

The First Lady emphasized that society's perception of persons with disabilities need to change, noting that they had made significant contributions to the nation's progress.

MPL hired 40 persons with disabilities on a contract basis under their 'Fahi Program'.

Although the current jobs are on a contract basis, MPL said that after assessing areas of competency, permanent employment would be arranged in the future.

MPL also introduced an accessibility feature on their website for vision-impaired persons. This feature was launched by Minister of Social and Family Development Dr Aishath Shiham.
