The construction work for HDh. Naagoashi, which was leased for tourism purposes 17 years ago, has seen an employment opportunity announcement released yesterday.

The announcement from Maldives Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC) reads that they are looking for Maldivians to do different types of work at the island's job site.

The announcement states that they are looking for 20 people for 13 positions. The positions are Project Manager, Construction Manager, Planning Engineer, Quantity Surveyor, four Site Engineers, HSC Engineer, Procurement Officer, Procurement Assistant, Document Controller, four Site Supervisors, MEP Coordinator and two Draft Persons.

Those who are interested can email their CV and certificate copies to [email protected] before 27th November, 3:00pm as per the announcement.

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu went to Naagoashi during his visit to Haa Dhaalu Atoll in August. As per his announcement during his visit, the work around the resort will finish and open next year.

MTDC Managing Director Ahmed Niyaz has said in the past that the project has been planned to move forward in two steps. The first step is to finish the work for 183 rooms, with resort operations to begin next December. The resort will include beach villas, jacuzzi beach villas and water villas.

Niyaz said that the completion of the resort will see the creation of 600 jobs.

Initially, the development of Naagoashi as a resort was contracted to Russian company Threek International Pvt Ltd in 2007. This sublease was terminated in 2016 following failure to complete construction and to pay rent. MTDC had planned to develop a 600 bed resort on the island.

At the time of termination, 37 percent of the work on Naagoashi had been completed, with villas, restaurants and other structures nearly ready.

In 2017, the government took back Naagoashi from MTDC. However, in 2020, the island was once again handed over to MTDC under a new lease.

At the time, MTDC entered into an agreement with Dubai's Galadari Holdings to develop the resort. This agreement was terminated in 2023 after failure to complete any work in the intervening years, with the project being awarded to MTDC once again last year.
