The government has today opened applications for grants from the "Fertility Care Fund," which was established to provide financial assistance for In Vitro Fertilization (IVF), a specialized treatment for women who are naturally unable to conceive.

In an announcement made today by the National Social Protection Agency (NSPA), it was stated that grants from this opportunity will be given to 50 couples who receive the highest scores based on the application criteria.

Last year, the opportunity was opened to 100 couples, and MVR 7.1 million was spent on 93 couples, covering the period from January last year until last month, according to NSPA.

Applications for this opportunity, open from tomorrow until December 20th, can be submitted online via the government's "Gov.mv Portal." NSPA also released the guidelines today for assisting with IVF and IUI (Intrauterine Insemination) treatments through the Fertility Fund.

According to the guidelines, assistance can be requested by individuals who:

  • Have been married for at least three years.
  • Have a natural cause preventing them from conceiving.
  • Have been advised by specialists that IVF or IUI is the most suitable treatment after other fertility treatments have been unsuccessful.

Last week, NSPA reported that out of the 93 women who received treatment assistance, the treatment was successful for 23 individuals.

Currently, financial assistance for IVF is being provided through two separate funds:

  1. The State's welfare agency - NSPA's Fertility Care Fund.
  2. The Aasandha health insurance scheme.

Providing Aasandha coverage for fertility treatment for couples who are naturally unable to have children was one of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's key pledges to be achieved within the first 100 days of his administration.

Arrangements have also now been made to provide IVF services at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH).
