The Housing Ministry has said that those who were included in the previous government’s housing scheme will need to reapply for the government’s new housing project launching in January.
The earlier scheme, which included 4,000 flats in Hulhumale', attracted more than 15,000 applications. Under the new Housing for All policy, the government plans to allocate 7,500 flats in the Male' area, with applications opening on 4 January.
State Minister for Housing, Ahmed Nazim Mohamed, told Mihaaru News that even those declared eligible under the previous list must apply again because the new scheme uses different conditions and point allocations.
“This scheme will be opened separately because the conditions and points are given differently,” Nazim said.
The government said the updated rules aim to ensure flats go to the most deserving beneficiaries.
Applicants must meet three basic requirements: be 18 above years of age, a Maldivian citizen, and have resided continuously in Male' for at least 15 years.
The point system, with a maximum of 150 points, considers factors such as length of residence, income level, number of children, number of children with special needs, childlessness due to medical conditions, and ownership of land.
Nazim said the priority of this round is to provide housing for families who do not have property in their name.
Applications for the 7,500 flats and 15,000 plots in Male' will be accepted through the Hiyaa Portal from 4 January to 3 March.
The government said additional housing projects are planned in the coming years.
