President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that in order to resolve the housing issue, a total of 25,000 land plots will be issued from Rasmale', which is being developed as an eco-city to provide a permanent solution to the housing crisis.

Last week, President Muizzu announced that under this administration's housing policy, 15,000 land plots and 7,500 flats will be issued from the Male' region.

Speaking at the ceremony held last night to mark the two year anniversary of this administration, President Muizzu stated that as housing is the most key pledge of this administration, the eligibility criteria for the land plots and flats being offered in January are set to serve those most in need.

However, he assured that this does not mean the opportunity is lost for those who do not meet this eligibility criteria. He stated that this administration will ensure housing is provided for every person above the age of eighteen.

"There is a major pledge I have made. That housing will be provided to every Maldivian over the age of eighteen who does not possess housing. So there are more projects in order to fulfil this pledge in three years. So don't any of you get worried," he assured.

The President expressed conference that January's housing scheme will bring about a permanent solution to the housing difficulties in Male'.

"We are first giving 15,000 land plots from Rasmale'. The entire Rasmale' would be 25,000 land plots. It is not only land plots that we will be issuing from there. It will be developed as a modern eco-city," the President explained.

President Muizzu said that large dredgers will arrive in December, with land reclamation expected to finish by March or April. By the time that the process for applying for land plots is completed and recipients selected, land reclamation would be completed, he said.

The President further asserted that this administration will not designate land from unreclaimed areas as the previous government did.

1,153 hectares of land are to be reclaimed from Fushidhiggarufalhu, where Rasmale' is being developed. This will be an area triple the size of Hulhumale' Phase 1 and 2 together.

The President's manifesto states that, including flats and land plots in Fushidhiggarufalhu, 65,000 housing units will be established.

As per HDC, 182.85 hectares of land have been reclaimed in Rasmale' as of last week.
