Google to establish submarine cable station in Maldives

Google has decided to establish an international submarine cable station in Maldives.

Google will be establishing an international submarine cable landing station and a network facility in Addu City Hithadhoo.

The Economic Ministry released a statement welcoming Google's decision, with the statement reading that the project is something that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu had discussed and reached the conclusion to move forward with Google Executives during his visit to New York.

The ministry said that this historic project is an important step in expressing Maldives' role in the advancing technology and innovation industry throughout the globe.

As per the ministry, the facility in Hithadhoo will become a facility capable of landing international submarine cables. The ministry's statement also reads that due to this project, Maldives will become a "unifying and trusted digital gateway" for Asia, Oceania, Africa, the Middle East and Europe.

"This is an opportunity for Maldives to become a main hub in the corridor of digital connectivity being established in the Indian Ocean. Along with the established connectivity points in Male' and Kulhudhuffushi, and with the international connectivity point to be established in Addu City Hithadhoo, it will facilitate the economic development of Maldives, with the island nation becoming a regional communication center," as was written in the statement.

The ministry said that with this investment from Google, there will be an increase in interest from international investors, with the potential for opportunities to further develop fields such as cloud services, FinTech, digital content and technology start-ups.

The ministry said that this project will allow the government's ongoing work to facilitate job opportunities to play a key role and will also diversify the economy.

The ministry also gave their assurance that the government will offer their full cooperation and support in enforcing the total success of this revolutionary project.
