The Utility Regulatory Authority (URA) has also announced that the water
being supplied in Fuvahmulah City meets the required standards.
In a brief statement, the Authority said that the water
supplied by Fenaka Corporation to Fuvahmulah meets the URA's supply water
standards.
The URA's statement follows a previous announcement by
the Maldives Food and Drug Authority (MFDA), which said that in connection with
the water supply issue supplied by Fenaka's Fuvahmulah Branch, water samples
were collected and analyzed from various areas of the city. The MFDA stated
that the results of those analyses show the water meets the drinking water
standards set by the World Health Organization (WHO).
However, the Fuvahmulah City Council has decided to file
a lawsuit against Fenaka Corporation to ensure the safety of the water being
supplied to the city.
The water service was completely shut off last Monday
after tests related to the Fuvahmulah water indicated the presence of
contamination. The Council expressed concern after Fenaka resumed the water
supply last Thursday without confirming the safety of the water.
In a statement released yesterday, the Fuvahmulah City
Council said that they had repeatedly raised the water issue with relevant
government authorities to find a solution. However, since the issues were not
resolved, and the service began to be interrupted and complaints of
contamination increased from the middle of last month, the Council submitted
the matter to relevant authorities for water testing.
The Council's statement indicated that while Fenaka
Corporation stated the supply was resumed after the MFDA confirmed the water
was safe, the MFDA's analyses and results have not been shared with the Council
to date.
The Council stated that since providing safe water is a
human right and the city's residents are being deprived of it, they have
decided to submit the matter to the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives
(HRCM). Furthermore, they announced the decision to file a lawsuit seeking a
court order for Fenaka to ensure the water supplied to Fuvahmulah is safe and
to fully adhere to the standards set by the Utility Authority and other
relevant institutions in providing water to households.
In the statement, the City Council also appealed to
Fenaka not to resume the water supply until the proposed network improvements
are completed, submitted to the Utility Authority, and permission is granted by
the Authority and notified to the Council.
