Applications for new flats and land to open on January 4

Applications for flats and land under the government’s new housing scheme will open on January 4, 2026, the Housing Ministry has announced.

The application window will remain open until March 3.

According to the ministry, every Maldivian citizen aged 18 and above is eligible to apply through the Hiyaa Portal.

Applicants must choose either the land allocation policy or the flat allocation policy applicable to residents of Male'.

Under the land or plot allocation policy, the government will issue 15,000 plots of 1,250 square feet.

A total of 10,000 plots will be allocated for Male' residents. Of these:

  • 7,000 plots will be allocated for those registered in Male' from birth
  •  1,000 for those registered in the Male' Resident Registry
  • 2,000 for those later registered in the Male' Resident Registry

Under the housing policy, 3,000 plots have been allocated for residents of other islands who have lived in Male' for 15 consecutive years. Of these:

  • 500 plots for those deprived of inheriting parent's property
  • 1,000 plots for those seeking land swaps due to narrow streets hindering development

Island residents may apply for land upon completing 15 years of continuous residence in Male'.

Under the policy, a total of 4,000 flats will be allocated for Male' residents, 1,500 flats for non-residents living in Male' . 2,000 flats for special categories, including 800 flats for employees of state institutions, MNDF, and police, and flats designated for single parents, fishermen, taxi drivers, tourism employees

The government launched the “Boahiyaavahikan Enmennah” (Housing for All) policy on Sunday night at a ceremony held at Dharumavantha Hospital’s conference hall.

Housing Minister Dr Abdullah Muththalib said past housing programmes had raised concerns over fairness, but the new policies aim to end the longstanding struggles faced by families seeking secure housing. “Every family will have a dignified life in their own home,” he said.
