State institutions, MNDF and police to be allocated flats under housing policy

The government has allocated 800 flats for state institutions, MNDF, and police officers under the “Boahiyaavahikan Enmennah” (Housing for All) initiative launched last night.

The housing policy was published in the Government Gazette last night.

The ceremony held at the Dharumavantha Hospital conference hall last night outlined the allocation of 7,500 housing units in the Male' area.

Of these, 2,000 units are designated for special categories, with 800 flats reserved for employees of various government agencies, including:

  • Police – 100
  • MNDF – 100
  • Civil Service employees – 200
  • Other independent state institutions – 300

Institutions receiving allocations include:

  • President’s Office
  • Parliament Secretariat
  • Attorney General’s Office
  • Foreign Service
  • Judicial Service Commission
  • Elections Commission
  • Civil Service Commission
  • Anti Corruption Commission
  • Human Rights Commission
  • Auditor General’s Office
  • Prosecutor General’s Office
  • Maldives Monetary Authority
  • Maldives Inland Revenue Authority
  • Pension Office
  • National Integrity Commission
  • Media and Broadcasting Commission
  • Family Protection Authority
  • National Disaster management
  • Maldives International Arbitration Centre
  • Children's Ombudsperson's Office 
  • Institute of Chartered Accountants Office
  • Capital Market Development Authority
  • Employment Tribunal
  • Local Government Authority
  • Tax Appeal Tribunal

Allocations for the general public

A total of 4,000 units will be allocated to residents of Male':

  • 2,500 units for those registered in a Malé household since birth
  • 1,000 units for those listed in the Male' Residents’ Registry
  • 500 units for those later registered in a Male' household

A further 1,500 units are reserved for non-residents who have been living in Male' for a continuous 15 year period.

Special priority categories

The policy also allocates units for specific groups, including:

  • Single mothers and single fathers with children under 18 – 100
  • Persons with disabilities – 100
  • Newlyweds and young families – 250
  • Taxi drivers with families in Male' – 50
  • Tourism workers with families in Male'– 200
  • Judiciary employees with families in Male' – 100
  • Registered fishermen with families in Male' – 100
  • Individuals deprived of land following a mother’s death and not inheriting grandparents’ property – 50
  • Those holding allocation documents for VeshiFahi Male' or Hiyaa flats but not yet handed their units – 300
  • Poor families identified by a state-appointed assessment – 50

Eligibility

Applicants must be over 18 and either:

  • registered as a resident of Male', or
  • have lived continuously in Male' for 15 years if originally from another island.

The Hiyaa project, first launched during former President Abdulla Yameen’s administration, previously reserved its 7,000 units for doctors, nurses, teachers and other such categories. 

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu announced last week that the government will allocate 15,000 land plots and 7,500 flats in the Male' area as part of its wider housing policy.
