Cracks at Fahi flats, FDC says no danger

FDC's Engineering Department Head Chief Development Officer Hassan Manih Umar explained that these are edge, plaster and finishing cracks. He said that these cracks are occurring due to changes in temperature, and as a result of the building settling.

Concerns are being raised regarding cracks appearing in the structure of the recently completed Fahi Dhiriulhun Corporation (FDC) flats.

At present, only a few units of the Amaan Udhares 14 tower is being occupied from the 4000 flats FDC constructed through contracting to two Indian companies.

Some residents who moved in to the flats just two months ago claim that cracks are now appearing both inside and outside the building.

Some residents said that there are cracks on other buildings in the complex which are yet to be occupied. This includes Amaan Udhares 12, 13 and 14. Some of these are still under construction.

Residents said that the concerns regarding the cracks have been raised with FDC.

FDC Managing Director Hamdhan Shakeel responded to Mihaaru News that small cracks are bound to appear in all new builds, and there may be other small issues, especially when utilities are being connected and people are moving in.

Hamdhan said that these issues would be resolved during the Defect Liability Period (DLP) given to contractors.

Hamdhan assured that minor cracks such as these pose no risk to the building structure.

"Structurally, there is no danger. However, we urge those living there to report any issues they find. Then we can attend to those," Hamdhan responded.

FDC's Engineering Department Head Chief Development Officer Hassan Manih Umar explained that these are edge, plaster and finishing cracks. He said that these cracks are occurring due to changes in temperature, and as a result of the building settling. He added that this would be addressed at the earliest.

As of October 26, electricity services have been set up for flats in Amaan Udhares 11, 12 and 13. Once water supply is provided, keys to the flats will be handed over to recipients.

These 4000 flats consist of two-bedroom and three-bedroom units. Construction of the 32 towers of 17 to 18 storeys have now been completed, with finishing work currently in progress. FDC has previously said that all flats here will be handed over to recipients by the end of December.
