President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that households will pay no more than MVR 400 for electricity during the upcoming Ramadan, with the government discounting the remainder of the bill.
Speaking at a People’s National Congress (PNC) rally at Male' Artificial Beach last night, President Muizzu said the discounted rate would apply to all domestic households.
“The rest will be discounted,” he said.
The government offered similar electricity and water bill concessions last Ramadan, when the state-owned utility Stelco issued separate discounted bills to households.
Muizzu also said that, as in previous years, every household would receive a case of canned tuna for Ramadan. Island councils have already begun gathering information to facilitate distribution.
Thousands attended the rally, where the president also highlighted a bill submitted to Parliament allowing people aged 65 to 75 to continue working.
“Athe bill is passed, people are gaining self-empowerment. Incomes will increase,” he said.
Turning to healthcare, Muizzu announced that next year’s budget would allocate MVR 2,000 for each patient with thalassemia; a measure he said was aimed at giving “special priority” to affected families. “This is to make this society a caring, compassionate and equal society,” he said.
