The Maldives Food and Drug Authority (MFDA) has announced that test results,
conducted after measures were taken to resolve the contamination issue in
Fuvahmulah City's water supply, confirm the water is safe for use.
In a statement, the MFDA said that they had collected
and analyzed water samples from various areas of the city in connection with
the contamination problem in the municipal water supplied by Fenaka's
Fuvahmulah Branch.
The MFDA stated that the results of these analyses show
the water meets the drinking water standards set by the World Health
Organization (WHO).
Yesterday, the Fuvahmulah City
Council announced that the Mayor and Council members visited the water plant
and met with Fenaka officials to discuss water safety. They emphasized that
water should not be released for public use until test results confirming its
safety were obtained.
The city's water supply, contaminated and rendered unusable
by Fenaka, had been shut off starting last Monday, with supply resuming three
days later.
A resident previously reported that the water problem had persisted for some
time, with changes in the water's taste and color, but people had continued to
use the water.
