The national airline, Maldivian,
today operated its largest aircraft, the A330-200, for the first time to Gan,
Addu.
An official from Island Aviation
told Mihaaru News today that the A330-200 flight to Gan was chartered by a
private party. The official added that there is currently a high demand for
travel between Malé and Gan.
"A charter flight was operated
because we saw a high demand for the A330 to Gan during this time. We have
operated larger aircraft before to high-demand locations based on the same
principle, and we did so again this time due to the significant increase in
demand," the official stated.
Maldivian's A330-200, which
typically operates scheduled flights between the Maldives and China, conducted
the first flight from Malé to Gan this morning at 9:36 am. A return flight from
Gan to Malé was operated this afternoon at 12:49 pm.
The operation of Maldivian's largest
aircraft to Gan coincides with the start of an influx of supporters arriving in
Malé for a major rally to be held by the ruling party, the Progressive National
Congress (PNC), tomorrow night at the Artificial Beach. Many supporters from
Addu arrived in Malé last night, and people have been arriving from other
islands since last night for the PNC event.
PNC Chairperson and Speaker of the
Parliament, Abdul Raheem Abdulla, previously stated that the rally will clearly
demonstrate the political inclination of the Maldives and which leader the
Maldivian people stand behind.
