Police have launched a large-scale operation targeting drug trafficking networks across the Maldives, searching more than 100 locations at the same time.

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu announced the operation on X this morning, stating that over 500 police officers are taking part.

According to police, the coordinated raids began at 5:30 am and are based on intelligence information. Teams from multiple police departments are carrying out simultaneous searches and enforcement actions across the country.

Police described the effort as the most extensive anti-drug operation in recent history.

“This operation is part of our sustained efforts to stop and eradicate drug trafficking networks operating in the country and bring to justice those responsible for the spread of drugs in society,” the agency said.

The announcement follows a recent major drug bust in which 355 kilograms of narcotics were seized from a Sri Lankan fishing vessel. Five foreign nationals were arrested and remain in custody pending trial.
