Land reclamation finished in Guraidhoo, MTCC to expand jetty

The President assured that the government will provide full cooperation and facilitate the use of the newly added land for the needs of the Guraidhoo community.

Following the completion of the government's land reclamation project on K. Guraidhoo by Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), the government today also awarded the company the contract for the island's harbor expansion project.

The ceremony to mark the completion of the land reclamation project was graced by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu and attended by Minister of Housing and Construction Dr. Abdullah Muththalib.

In his speech at the ceremony, the President highlighted that the completion of the land reclamation project will bring an end to the struggles of many residents and solves numerous issues on the island. He noted that the project was completed in a very short period of time.

The reclamation project, which added 10.5 hectares of land to Guraidhoo, was commenced by MTCC in April, meaning the work took approximately seven months.

The President assured that the government will provide full cooperation and facilitate the use of the newly added land for the needs of the Guraidhoo community.

"Be it for housing projects to construct homes and land plots, or prioritizing work for social and urban development, the government will stand with these beloved people, offering full cooperation to reach the desired destination," the President stated.

During the same ceremony marking the completion of the reclamation, the agreement for the Guraidhoo harbor expansion project was officially signed. Minister Dr. Abdullah Muththalib signed the agreement on behalf of the government, and MTCC's Managing Director, Ahmed Saudhee, signed on behalf of the company.

The land reclamation project added 10.15 hectares of land to the island. In addition to the reclamation, the coastal protection component included:

  • A 1,062-meter large rock revetment.
  • A 362-meter geo-bag revetment.
  • 88 meters of groynes.

The project was valued at MVR 89 million. K. Guraidhoo has a population of 814 and is a hub for local tourism with 15 guesthouses.
