The Local Government Ministry announced today that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has decided that the government will once again distribute canned fish cases as the Ramadan gift for the upcoming fasting month.

Minister Adam Shareef told Mihaaru News that for Ramadan, which begins on February 18, 2026, the government will distribute one case of canned fish to every household, similar to the previous year.

Although he did not provide further details, some island councils have already begun collecting household information in preparation for the distribution.

The Ministry of Finance previously stated that over 108,000 cases of canned fish were distributed by the government as the Ramadan gift last year.

The last distribution saw the government giving a case of canned fish to households across Malé and the atolls, fulfilling a decision by President Muizzu.

In April last year, a Finance Ministry official provided Mihaaru News with the details:

  • A total of 108,801 cases of canned fish were distributed as the Ramadan gift.
  • The state spent MVR 79.4 million on purchasing the canned fish for the people.
  • The official confirmed that the amount spent was MVR 79 million distributed to the people as the Ramadan gift.
  • MIFCO provided a MVR 30 discount per case, resulting in the government paying MVR 730 per case.

The distribution was handled with the assistance of state-owned companies and the military in the Malé area, while island councils managed the distribution in the atolls.
