Water supply in Fuvahmulah City is expected to resume early this evening, resolving a disruption that began earlier in the week, Fenaka Corporation Managing Director Mohamed Najah said today.
The island, home to around 13,800 residents, has faced water supply cut off since Monday after contamination rendered the supply unsafe for consumption.
President's Office Spokesperson Heena Waleed said yesterday that supply would be restored within six hours once safety was confirmed. However, water was not released within that timeframe.
Najah told Mihaaru News that the problem stemmed from how household pipes had been connected, with some properties pipes linked to both freshwater and well water sources.
He said those household connections would be corrected later, but the issue with the main network had now been resolved. Water will be supplied once test results confirm its safety.
“The water is expected to be released again around 4–5 pm today,” Najah said.
The government said it had arranged temporary supplies for Fuvahmulah, with 1,200 cases of bottled water sent by sea and air, and more shipments expected.
