President Dr Mohamed Muizzu today called on the government to expedite trials for individuals who have been detained pending trial, stressing that people should not remain in detention indefinitely.

Speaking at an official gathering for this year’s Republic Day, the President said, “People have rights. With justice and fairness, I am 100 percent sure the judiciary will decide this very soon. If amendments to laws are required, the government will fully cooperate.”

Efforts to end indefinite detention:

  • Allocate a separate budget to the judiciary for financial independence
  • Start construction of a Superior Court complex
  • Build a separate facility for the Criminal Court
  • Provide dedicated space for the Drug Court

President Muizzu highlighted steps being taken to ensure the independence of the judiciary, including a dedicated percentage of next year’s budget for judicial services.

This allocation will allow the judiciary to manage its own expenditures independently, without requiring external approval for daily operations.

“We want to make the judiciary independent and fair,” the President said, emphasizing the government’s commitment to liberalizing and empowering the judicial system.
