The water supply in Fuvahmulah City has become unsafe for human consumption, and it will take several days to restore normal supply, the Fuvahmulah City Council said today.

The city’s water, serving over 13,800 residents, was cut off around 1:00 pm yesterday to address issues in the water network.

Deputy Mayor Mohamed Fikury said the water supply had been experiencing problems for several days, but Fenaka Corporation had not taken sufficient measures to resolve them.

Fikury added that water leakage at the Fenaka plant and inadequate production have caused difficulties for households. Public complaints increased recently, prompting an official from the Utility Regulatory Authority to visit Fuvahmulah, take water samples, and conduct tests.

“The water condition is so poor that it is not suitable for human consumption,” Fikury said.

Work has begun to improve the water supply, including adding a high dose of chlorine to the network under expert guidance.

The Disaster Management Authority and MNDF are providing emergency water, bringing supplies from Addu City and Male'.

Fenaka has also issued a notice advising residents not to use water purifiers until the situation is resolved.
