Cargo ship capsizes and sinks near Felidhoo

A cargo ship carrying goods from Male' to Gaafu Alifu Faresmaathoda has capsized and begun sinking near Vaavu atoll Felidhoo.

A police media official confirmed that 12 people were on board the vessel "Fahiroalhi Boat" including nine foreigners and three locals.

Those on board included the owner, captain, and several crew members. All have been safely transported to Felidhoo with assistance from police.

According to officials, the vessel ran aground, causing its bow to rupture, and much of the ship is now underwater.

Police said they are investigating the incident.
