Maldives is now a member of the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced.
COPUOS is the UN body mandated to promote international cooperation in the peaceful exploration and use otherwise of outer space.
As a member of COPUOS, the Maldives is now positioned to help guide global space governance and advocate for the use of space science and technology for sustainability and climate resilience, the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
COPUOS membership offers the Maldives the chance to harness space-derived data to strengthen climate monitoring, maritime safety, environmental protection, and disaster preparedness, the statement reads.
Alongside Maldives, Honduras, Zimbabwe, Malta, The Gambia, and Cote d'Ivorie also joined the committee.
