Minister of Education Dr. Ismail Shafeeu today stated that the Ministry
intends to introduce changes that would allow the dismissal of a teacher if an
internal investigation confirms that the teacher has caused any form of abuse
to a student.
The Minister's comments to "Mihaaru" follow the recent arrests and
suspensions of teachers from four different schools across the country on
suspicion of sexual abuse. The Minister noted that such incidents often occur
outside school premises. However, he emphasized that protecting schools from
such occurrences is a top priority for the Ministry.
Dr. Shafeeu said that if a teacher is accused and the allegation is proven
true by an internal inquiry, the Ministry will hold discussions with the Civil
Service Commission (CSC) to amend regulations, allowing for disciplinary
action, including dismissal.
Under the current procedures, when a teacher is accused of sexual abuse,
they are typically suspended pending the completion of the Police's criminal
investigation and the conclusion of the case in court. However, the lengthy
court process and the fact that the teacher remains suspended in the post make
it difficult for schools to hire additional staff.
Dr. Shafeeu stated that the Ministry's intention is to allow for termination
if the allegations are proven true by the administrative inquiry, regardless of
the outcome of the criminal court case.
"The (sexual abuse) case might not be proven in court. But teachers in
schools must be the most trustworthy people. We will take action on that
matter," he said.
The four teachers recently arrested on sexual abuse charges have been
suspended for 30 days. The suspension period can be extended depending on the
progress of the investigation.
