President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has stated that the administrative separation of Hulhudhoo and Meedhoo (in Addu
City) is the beginning of fulfilling the long-awaited development goals of the
residents of both islands.
President Muizzu began his visit to
Addu yesterday by first traveling to Hulhudhoo and Meedhoo. The residents of both
islands gathered together to give him a warm welcome at the harbor.
Addressing a gathering of residents
at S. Atoll Madhrasa, the President said that the "disappointment and hardship"
experienced by the people of these two islands under the previous
administrative system was brought to an end because the citizens themselves
requested the change. The President expressed happiness that the change was
implemented as desired by the residents, following a referendum (Yes/No) vote.
"I welcome the beloved citizens
of both islands for this change," the President said.

The President asserted that the
administrative separation of Hulhudhoo and Meedhoo marks the beginning of
achieving the development that the residents have long hoped for. He added that
with this change in the administrative system, the basic needs of both islands
will be addressed in the coming days.
The President's visit followed his
decision last Monday to separate Hulhudhoo and Meedhoo from Addu City's
administrative control and establish two separate island councils. This
decision was based on the result of the referendum held on October 25, which
sought the opinion of residents of Meedhoo, Hulhudhoo, and Feydhoo, which are
geographically separate from the main connected islands of Addu, regarding the
administrative split.
Defining
the Jurisdiction
The President stated that since
Hulhudhoo and Meedhoo are geographically connected, the government has
considered defining the jurisdiction in a way that aligns
with the citizens' wishes.
"In defining the jurisdiction
of the Hulhudhoo Council and the Meedhoo Council, the government will consider
the boundary to be the area starting from the northwest side of the road
leading to the 'Medhu Bandharu' or central jetty, extending along the populated
road south of S. Atoll Madhrasa, and drawing a straight line east. The area
north of this line will be Meedhoo, and the area south will be Hulhudhoo,"
the President detailed.
The President noted that this
division reflects the historical separation of the two islands.
