Position meant for Yameen dissolved

Yameen was appointed as HDC's CBO for a one year contract in December 2023, with the contract expiring in December 2024. However, Yameen had stated that HDC told him that his contract would not be renewed one month after it had expired in January 2025.

Housing Development Corporation (HDC) has dissolved the position of Chief Business Officer (CBO) and Head of Media Department, a post the court had ordered to be reinstated for Ahmed Yameen after the company decided not to renew his contract.

Yameen was appointed as HDC's CBO for a one year contract in December 2023, with the contract expiring in December 2024. However, Yameen had stated that HDC told him that his contract would not be renewed one month after it had expired in January 2025.

The case was taken to the Employment Tribunal, which ruled that Yameen held a permanent post without a specified term and that his dismissal was carried out without substantive or procedural fairness. And so the tribunal stated that Yameen cannot be considered as someone who has been removed from his post.

The tribunal subsequently ordered HDC to reinstate Yameen and pay him MVR 144,000, equivalent to six months’ salary in compensation. However, HDC has appealed the tribunal's decision to the High Court.

HDC requested a stay order regarding the tribunal's ruling from the High Court, which was issued by the High Court yesterday.

As per the order, HDC made their appeal as the position that Yameen is to be reinstated to has been dissolved and that there is a legal debate that needs to be conducted regarding compensation.

Yameen has told Mihaaru News previously that he completed the appraisal process to become a permanent employee under the supervision of then-Managing Director Ibrahim Fazul Rasheed, who had also decided to confirm his post as permanent. He stated that he believes he is a permanent employee due to this.

He questioned the validity of HDC’s decision, noting the letter of non renewal was issued a month after his contract had already expired.

It is unclear on what grounds the company chose not to renew his contract. Yameen has claimed he was sidelined from his responsibilities following investigations into the Gedhoruveriyaa and Binveriyaa housing schemes.
