Male' City Mayor Adam Azim has begun his campaign for a second term.
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu resigned as mayor when he was elected, with Azim proceeding to win the by-elections and was sworn in on 22nd January 2024.
The terms of the elected members in by-elections will have the remainder of the council's term counted as well. And so, the Male' Mayor will have to run for re-election in the March 2026 council election.
Azim has decided to run for re-election, with him having met with supporters last night to garner further support. However, a primary has not been held yet by MDP to decide a mayoral candidate.
Azim told Mihaaru News that he is the only MDP member to have expressed an interest in running for mayor and has begun campaigning officially.
Azim has said that he has solved various issues that have plagued residents of Male' within his two-year term. He stated that he has found a solution for the flooding issues in the capital city.
"I believe I have extensively served the residents of Male' within my two-year term. I am running for a second term after having solved issues such as flooding," said Azim.
Azaim stated that if he is able to do a total of five years in terms, he believes he would have done even more than he already has.
Former MTCC CEO Azim went on to say that there is still more to be done for residents of Male' moving forward, such as road repair, sewage works and various housing matters.
As per Azim, it is important he receives a full and complete term in order to accomplish these works.

"There is work to be done to address issues such as road repair, sewage works and various housing matters. I am running for a second term because I believe I need a full term to find solutions to what I need to do."
While Azim has begun campaigning for Mayor, it is unclear as to who will run for the position from the current government. The council has a PNC majority as well.
Azim won the mayoral election after running against Male' City councilor Mohamed Saif Fathih, former Attorney General Aishath Azima Shakoor and former Police Commissioner Hussain Waheed.
